Day 94 - September 17 - Crash

It's time for more prayer. For some reason this evening, when Connor was turned onto his side his heart rate dropped to the mid-30s and he turned ashen. The nurses were there in a moment, and he was quickly stabilized, but there were about fifteen doctors, nurses, and various technicians clamoring around his room for thirty minutes or so. It was fairly exciting, with lots of speculation about vagal nerves, and barycardia, and glucose levels, and all sorts of very medical-sounding things.

After much rummaging around; after a stat X-ray that confirmed that his lungs are healthier than they were when we got here; and after a stat blood test that showed that his white count was 6.8K (remember that under 10 is good?), they have tentatively decided that the possible explanation might have been that one of his ventilator hoses may have come disconnected. While there may be a different cause, that seems to be the most likely explanation, since all of the checks they did afterward were all just the way they were supposed to be.

The event shook the boy up pretty badly, so I am spending the night in the hospital with him tonight, just to act as a sort of moral support, as it were. We would appreciate your prayers - first, that this might have been only an equipment problem and nothing more; that Connor would remain calm and trust God in this; and that his condition would continue to improve even more dramatically than it has thus far.

Tomorrow, 9/18/08, is "N" - how about "near". James 4:8 tells us to draw near to God, and He will draw near to us.

Move over - we're scrunching in.

I know this verse has popped up numerous times over the course of the past three months, but it's true, nonetheless. But I want to include several of the verses that precede it because the aching of the Psalmist is so palpable, which makes his declaration all the more amazing.

I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is.

So I say, "My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD."

I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall.

I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me.

Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope:

Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.

They are NEW every morning; great is your faithfulness.

I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him."

Wait for the NEW mercy His word promises. It will come to pass. I pray God will grant you patience and a complete trust in His timing.

I think that kind of episode would scare anyone, let alone someone who at this point in time must rely on the quick thinking and actions of others.

Continuing to lift Connor up to the Lord in prayer. May his fears be lifted away and may he rest in the knowledge that God is with him.

LORD, please wrap Connor in your love and bannish all his fears.
LORD, he is your child and he is fearful. He is trying to be brave and trust in You, let him feel You near. Through the HOLY SPIRIT give him comfort, a blessed nights sleep, and renewed joy and faith in the morning.
This I ask in JESUS' name, in faith believing, Amen.

I lay awake last night trying to think of an "N" name, knowing that it would be the letter for today, and the only word that popped into my head at the time was "Ninja."

Okay, do not ask me why. I am not trying to be disrespectful either. Maybe, it was because I was with little boys all day long, but I could not get that dumb word out of my head. I literally was like, "Get out! Get out! Get out!"

Anyway, after some thought, I did come up with "Name Above All Other Names, but Charlene took it.

Man, one comment too late! :)

OK, N is a toughie! Couldn't think of an N attribute that hasn't already been said, but came up with Nazareth...and it sort of ties in with drawing near:

John 1:45-46
45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."

46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked.
"Come and see," said Philip.

The Jews were not expecting anything good to come from Nazareth, let alone their Messiah. Rather than trying to explain things, Philip just answered Nathaneal's question with, "Come and see." The disciples and many many people did come and see Jesus and found that indeed something good did come from Nazareth!

Things we aren't expecting - tough times, diving accidents, serious injuries and trials - can anything good come from these things? "Come and see" goes well with the ConnorWatch t-shirts - "Watch God at Work". He has and will continue to do good things - some we get to see right away, some will be seen at a later time, and some we'll never even know about.

Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Come and see. Draw near to Him. God is working and He is good, all time. Continuing to pray for you all!

When Jesus was being questioned by Pilate about why the chief priests delivered Him up, we read this:

I would love to know about Connor's day today: what he was able to do, what he enjoyed for his meals, what occupied his thoughts particularly, what his doctor said, what made him smile, etc.! God is nigh, Connor...and we are with you as well.

Fair? Fair? Really? Fair!? What really would be fair? What would we like...we....like....God to be fair about? Be fair? Why? Again, what would be fair? What about the millions through history who lived and died without knowing the word of God? The love of God. Suffering? Why don't we just end war, world hunger, pangs of death. It sounds like heaven. There we are not. True fairness from God would be eternal damnation and separation from HIM. For the wages of sin are death and all have fallen short. What you are looking for you have already received...Grace. You have been given a son who believes. A son who has and will receive the greatest gift of all...life eternal. Grace eternal, love eternal, peace eternal. This life is a vapor that will soon pass away.

That being said I love you and Connor and your family. You are all beautiful and are my brothers and sisters in Him. I see people in this situation everyday. I personally cannot fathom being in your shoes or Connors. I wish I could take it all away for you. It pains me to see you struggle and I barely know you. I too pray Connor will be healed. But, beware, of asking for fairness. God is just and absolute he will provide....maybe not what you want or think you want but in the end or beginning whatever you perspective on true life.

Stay the course. The path is narrow and few will find it. That is the true tragedy. Few will find it. You have a great gift and so does Connor. Who could better benefit from this than those poor unbelieving souls. Benefit from God's strength in ultimate human weakness. Having faith when everything is like heaven on earth is one thing. Having faith when we are broken is another. In essence, we are all truly broken. Connors faith has shown me how absolutely weak mine is. May God bless him and you.

Well, that's the best I can do at the letter "N" but the song is very special b/c God's faithfulness is what this struggle is all about--or we wouldn't be able to withstand it.

I'm truly sorry to have to ask this, but could you please point me to an occasion when I demanded fairness from God? I can't think of one personally, although I'll be the first to admit that my memory isn't what it used to be. I'm the first person to acknowledge how blessed I am before God - spiritually, relationally, and materially - as I'm also vociferously reminding God of HIs own words in the Bible, and expecting Him to be faithful to them.

Yes, I bemoan the fact that my son has been stripped of so much, while others are granted such blessing. To do otherwise would be to deny my own humanity. But I take exception to the idea that this somehow means I'm whining about fairness. Not to compare myself to the Psalmists, but many of them asked the same question - "Why do the wicked prosper while the righteous are destroyed?" Also, if anyone here thinks they would never question God's direction in our situation, I respectfully suggest that you try it with your own son.

Finally, I have asked before, but many people come and go, so I'll ask again - I have placed my inner thoughts onto the web for all the world to see, pick apart, laugh at, or whatever. I respectfully request that, if someone wants to challenge me or my views, they do me the honor of using their name. In my humble opinion, someone who will not stand openly behind their own views doesn't really persuade me to consider them...

I too was wondering when Eric ever complained about things being unfair. I know for myself I have said many times, "It seems so unfair for a seemingly wonderful young man to have to go through this." My daughter had to do a paper in school about when God seemed unfair and instead of using our situation because of the nearness of it to her she wrote about Connor's situation. But I can never remember you saying that, which is amazing.

We all know that life isn't fair and that only God sees the big picture. How many questions I will someday have for Him!
I know whom I have believed and am pursaded that He is able to keep that which I've committed unto HIm against that day.
