Day 93 - September 16 - Good news, bad news

As they say in the old jokes, I've got some good news and some bad news. But first I must acknowledge a couple of significant things. First, today marks three months - one entire season - since Connor ran into the water that afternoon. It doesn't seem possible. Second, on this date in 1810, the Mexican war for independence from Spain began. So there's the two significant events!

Now for the bad news first - after having MRSA in Fresno, then not finding it since we've been here in San Jose, then finally being cleared from the pseudamonas last week, and after two tests to confirm that the boy doesn't have MRSA, he has MRSA. Don't ask - I can't explain it either. Apparently, there are two things you absolutely cannot get in a hospital - rest, and healthy. OK, three things, if you count "good food". Anyway, now we have at least another week of protocols for treatment of MRSA before they will look at letting us out of isolation. Since we're in the process of waiting for a room in the rehab unit, that might not be all bad - if a single room came available first, we'd move into that because of the isolation.

The good news is that this afternoon, when I arrived at Connor's room, he showed me that he can lift his head off of the headrest in his wheelchair, and turn it side to side! When the OT saw this, she asked what level Connor's injury was, and we told her what we've been told - the injury is C4/C5, but it is acting like a C1. She shook her head and said "No C1 or C2 can do what he just did, and it would be "maybe" for a C3 injury". We queried her about this and she speculated that the doctor might be referring to pinprick sensation only when he said "C1", but she was pretty insistent that this was not consistent with the C1 designation.

We are thanking the Lord for this new development, and we believe this to be a sign of restoration in the boy.

I haven't actually seen them yet, so as far as I'm concerned it's just an unconfirmed rumor, but Granny and Gramps arrived last night from Washington. Granny is here to lend support while Gramps is helping figure out what the future of our house might look like. They will be in town for about two weeks this time, and boy, are we glad to see them!

Finally, tomorrow is "M". Now some of you have been skipping ahead, but that's not allowed! Connor gets first crack at the letter, and tonight he says M is for "Master".

Thanks for your continued faithfulness, prayer, and support. We love you all.

I have to think about my 'M' word some more - plus I have a teleconference which starts in about 20 minutes (yeah, I know!)...

But I just had to add a Praise God for today's news about Connor's head movement! (All we need now is a wheelbarrow...)

Morning Star,

2 Peter 1:19
Beause of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place-until the day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts.

Christ is the "Morning Star," and when He returns, He will shine in His full glory. Until that day we have scripture and the Holy Spirit to illuminate it for us and guide us as we seek the truth

Awesome update on Connor being able to turn his head, now nobody can sneak up on you Connor 8-)
way to go!

Happy that Granny and Gramps made it down safely, our prayers are with you all.

Oh, well, the Thomas family beat me to it but I have the privilege of being the first "post" for Wed., 9/17/08. I don't imagine that means that I can start with the letter "N" though b/c Connor hasn't gotten a chance at that yet. I am so excited about the news from the OT today and praying about the MRSA. You never knew there were so many abbreviations in life, did you? That's medicine for you! Have a good day tomorrow--I mean today!
Praise God for his goodness and for Christ being our Mediator (an "M" word after all).

God's works, loving kindness, and light are MARVELOUS! (Kind of cheating again, I know...)

There are just so many good verses! But here's the one that describes His light:

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; (NKJV)

Here are all of them: http://www.biblestudytools.net/OnlineStudyBible/bible.cgi?word=marvelous&section=0&version=nkj&new=1&oq=marvelous

(Note that "marvelous" appears twice in the link above - if you don't see it twice, widen your browser window.)

MAKER

"In the beginning, God CREATED..."

And everything that was, is and ever will be followed that first act of Creation. He knew us before we ever came into being. I love Psalm 139 (starting in verse 5):

You hem me in -- behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,

even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,"

even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully MADE; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

My frame was not hidden from you when I was MADE in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

************

I'm sorry to hear about the recurrence of MRSA, but thrilled to know Connor is moving his head about on his own!!! That's a huge praise! Connor, you are the most courageous, tenacious, hard-working young man I've ever met. I'm impressed with your drive to not give up. Keep on keepin' on, buddy! I'm praying for you everyday.

Love in Christ,

Jenann

OK, just so we all don't get confused:

8-)

MRSA - Myacylin-Resistant Staphalococcys Aurreuos (my spelling is probably wrong, which is why I spell it "MRSA"!)

And "today" - 9/17 - is "M". We've been posting the next day's letter each evening to give everybody a crack at it. I'll start posting the applicable dates from now on.

Finally, I've noticed that it's real easy to focus on thinking of a word or words and forget the point of the exercise - to praise God for that attribute of His nature. If you're like me, take this as a reminder to stop and give praise when you read or think of these things!

Praise Him!!!

Sorry I have been out for a bit.....had a medical blurp but nothing to write home about. I hear you about the get well thing/sleep thing at the hospital. All I can say, it there is not place like home!

So happy.......really made my day......to hear that Connor can move his head! I'll be praying that his arms are next! God is good, always. I have noticed that when things get to be down in the dumps for y'all, God gives you a tid bit to hang on to. I pray you take that as a gift and a sign that God has not left you.

I start my small group back up today and I am going to share and add more people on board to pray for Connor! There are many praying for y'all. Our family has never met you but you are close to our hearts everyday and in our prayers as well.

At September 17, 2008 8:25 AM , Anonymous aaladd said...

Ok, this might be a stretch (or maybe not), but MANNA comes to mind - an Old Testament picture of our Savior, and the life we have through Him and His daily provision -

Deuteronomy 8:3
He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.

He is our Manna, our daily and eternal Bread of Life -

John 6:51
"I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."

God sent manna from heaven, then He sent his Son from heaven - Praise Him for this most precious gift - eternal life with Him through Christ!

My "M" word would be Master. Master of my life (at least I try!). Great news about the neck movement-we keep praying for you night and day. Hopefully, I can drop by soon since I just work down the street. I don't take a lunch so it's hard to sneak out! I get these daily quips and I thought this one was appropriate.
One day at a time - this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone: and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering."

IM sorry, I think this is the first time I cheated but after I posted Morning Star, all of a sudden a song came to me that I heard long ago and I can't get it out of my head I don't know it all but I've been praising Him all day long in song, Your the Lily of the Valley Your the Bright and Morning Star Your the fairest of 10,000 ????????? I don't know anymore but I love it. So for yesterday I will add
Lily of the Valley
Song of Solomon 2:1
Love you guys, can't wait for our progress report for today,
Go Connor, Go God!

Linda - here are the rest of the lyrics to Lily of the Valley - it's a wonderful old hymn!

1. I have found a friend in Jesus, He’s everything to me,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul;
The Lily of the Valley, in Him alone I see
All I need to cleanse and make me fully whole.
In sorrow He’s my comfort, in trouble He’s my stay;
He tells me every care on Him to roll.
* Refrain:
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.

2. He all my grief has taken, and all my sorrows borne;
In temptation He’s my strong and mighty tow’r;
I have all for Him forsaken, and all my idols torn
From my heart and now He keeps me by His pow’r.
Though all the world forsake me, and Satan tempt me sore,
Through Jesus I shall safely reach the goal.

3. He will never, never leave me, nor yet forsake me here,
While I live by faith and do His blessed will;
A wall of fire about me, I’ve nothing now to fear,
From His manna He my hungry soul shall fill.
Then sweeping up to glory to see His blessed face,
Where rivers of delight shall ever roll.

Linda - you're welcome :-)

Every verse in this hymn is filled with great theology and scriptural references - but I especially like verse two: only for the love of Jesus can we forsake our idols and gain victory, no matter the sin or the temptation to it! And through Him we shall safely reach the goal... wonderful words!
