Day 85 - September 8 - Praising

The other day, Connor and I started thinking of attributes of God that were worthy of praise. What we decided to do was think of them alphabetically, with one letter each day being the plan. The first day I had picked "awe-inspiring" (as opposed to "awesome"), and the next day we struggled to come up with "benevolent". Yesterday we praised Him for being constant, and for being our comfort, and caring, and for carrying us.

Short story long, this morning I woke up fighting despair again (0513), and I strove to come up with another attribute I could praise God for - one that started with "D", of course. As soon as I started thinking about it, I came up with "deliverer". I then tried and tried for another 20 minutes to think of any other attributes, but that's the only one that would come to my mind, so we've been praising God as our deliverer today.

The Bible says that God inhabits our praise. In the ESV, Psalm 22 says that He is "enthroned on the praises" of His people. I'm trying to learn to praise God for who He is, which is more constant than if I only praise Him for what He does. Cherié thought it would be fantastic if we could get everyone offering praises to God around the globe, all focusing on the same thing. She suggested that we put it out on the blog in order to get people all over the world praising God each day for who He is. I told her I liked the way she thought, so here we go -

Today was "D". Tomorrow will be "E". Y'all give us an attribute of God that begins with the letter "E". One each, no pushing. 8-) Then tomorrow we spend the day praising Him for the E's. Simple as that.

Go!

What a great idea!! The Duarte family wants to do one for today (with D) so we submit "distinct." We'll submit an "E" word later on.

"Distinct"
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: Distinguished from others by nature or qualities.

Philippians 2:11 - "and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Thank you for challenging us to think on who God is and not what He does.

Keeping the faith!!

We love you all,

Psalm 8:3&4 - When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?

God's works and His power are evident in everything around us...reminding us who HE is and who we are not.

And His power and presence are evident in what He is doing in Connor's life right now. Connor...we are praying for healing. We miss you!!!

God is our "Envoloper" - yes that is really a word! No, not the thing you put a letter in...

It is the noun form of the verb, Envelop:
1. to wrap up in or as in a covering.
2. to serve as a wrapping or covering for, as a membrane of an organ or a sheath.
3. to surround entirely.
4. Military. to attack (an enemy's flank).

"Behold, a virgin...shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel." (God with us)
Matthew 1:23
What a wonderful God and Savior He is and He is with us as He promised in Matthew 28:19,20;" Go ye, therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Goast. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the age." Let us sense His presence and make Him real. Walk, talk, live with, and love Him more and more as the days go by. Lord Jesus, we know that you dwell in us. May we enjoy your fellowship today, amen.
hahahaha, sorry, I got carried away

Earnest

The Holy Spirit is the "earnest", or deposit, or guarantee of salvation given to those who believe.

For example:
earnest money
–noun Law.
money given by a buyer to a seller to bind a contract.
[Origin: 1550–60]

From http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=earnest%20money

This is exactly what God has done - He bought us with Christ's blood, and gave us the deposit of the Holy Spirit to seal the deal. See 2 Corinthians 1:21-22; 5:5; 6:19-20; Ephesians 1:13-14; Acts 20:28.

What a GREAT IDEA!!! But, umm..I'm sorry...I HAVE to put more than one!!! I've got eight of them, but I'll restrain myself and list only three.

1) Effulgent - shining forth brilliantly; radiant; resplendant

"The Might One, God, the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets. From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth." Ps. 50:1-2

"Above the expanse over their heads was what looked like a throne of sapphire, and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man. I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him. Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord..." Eze. 1:26-28

2) Expiatory - having power to atone for, or offered by way of expiation or propitiation

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16

"But now a righteousness from God, apart from the law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. there is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished - he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus." Rom. 3:21-26

3) Everlasting to everlasting - without start and without end

"...'Stand up and praise the Lord your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting. Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise. You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.'" Neh. 9:5b-6

"Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God." Ps. 90:1-2

I was going to put down "enthroned," but you already mentioned it, Eric. So I'll just add that Isa. 6:1, Ps. 102:12, and all of Ps. 29 are great passages regarding God on His throne. (ESPECIALLY Ps. 29! wheeew! powerful passage!)

Praising God with you all today,

Jenann

Christine: thanks for extravagant! It immediately made me think of the Casting Crowns song - "Your Love is Extravagant"... What a great
song/reminder to start the day with!

Jenann: great words! I even found an old translation (Darby, first published in 1890) which uses effulgent/effulgence:

Hebrews 1:1 God having spoken in many parts and in many ways formerly to the fathers in the prophets, 2 at the end of these days has spoken to us in [the person of the] Son, whom he has established heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 who being [the] effulgence of his glory and [the] expression of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, having made [by himself] the purification of sins, set himself down on the right hand of the greatness on high, 4 taking a place by so much better than the angels, as he inherits a name more excellent than they.

Luke 9:28 And it came to pass after these words, about eight days, that taking Peter and John and James he went up into a mountain to pray. 29 And as he prayed the fashion of his countenance became different and his raiment white [and] effulgent. 30 And lo, two men talked with him, who were Moses and Elias, 31 who, appearing in glory, spoke of his departure which he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.

I guess I haven't actually written this yet, though I've thought it many times since I first read Eric's post last night - this is a wonderful exercise!!

Spurgeon wrote (in a sermon he delivered at the age of 20):

[T]he proper study of God's elect is God; the proper study of a Christian is the Godhead. The highest science, the loftiest speculation, the mightiest philosophy, which can ever engage the attention of a child of God, is the name, the nature, the person, the work, the doings, and the existence of the great God whom he calls his Father. There is something exceedingly improving to the mind in a contemplation of the Divinity. It is a subject so vast, that all our thoughts are lost in its immensity; so deep, that our pride is drowned in its infinity. Other subjects we can compass and grapple with; in them we feel a kind of self-content, and go our way with the thought, "Behold I am wise." But when we come to this master-science, finding that our plumb-line cannot sound its depth, and that our eagle eye cannot see its height, we turn away with the thought, that vain man would be wise, but he is like a wild ass's colt; and with the solemn exclamation, "I am but of yesterday, and know nothing." No subject of contemplation will tend more to humble the mind, than thoughts of God.

(I'm going to save the title of the sermon for a few days from now :-)

Emancipator: To free a slave from bondage

Romans 6:22 - But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.

John 8:32 - Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Anonymous (2:27, 9/9) - amen! And a little more context for John 8:32 -

31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." 33 They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, 'You will be made free'?" [A myopic statement, to be sure - it seems to me that Israel spent most of the Old Testament in bondage because of their sin!] 34 Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. elevated - lifted up, raised, grand, exalted, lofty, sublime

enough - adequate for the want or need; sufficient for the purpose or to satisfy desire (as in 2 Cor. 12:9 "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.")

estimable - worthy of esteem; deserving respect or admiration

errorless - impeccable; exquisite; faultless; flawless; perfect

elemental - of, relating to, or being an ultimate and irreducible element; basic; fundamental (God is the beginning of all life and the whole universe. Everything springs forth from His creative force. Before anything came into being, HE IS.)
