Day 48 - August 2 - Seizure Update

The neurosurgeon just came back with the CT scan results - there's nothing wrong, and there's no apparent reason for the episode. Thank you, Lord!

Connor doesn't remember the episode, nor anything after it, which is common with seizure sufferers. He said the last thing he remembers about it is about five seconds of excruciating pain in his arms and chest.

During the interlude between then and now, I've been doing some research. One of the things I discovered is that the electrical impulses of the brain need to be completely regular and stable between brain and spinal cord in order to work properly, and a seizure can result when that is somehow disrupted. A nurse I know wondered if it is possible for powerful pain signals coming through a previously unresponsive part of the spinal cord to cause such disruptions. I don't know! But what I do know is more interesting...

For the last week or so Connor has been coughing occasionally, which we have taken as a sign that his diaphragm is awakening. I mentioned this to a nurse this morning, and her response was "That's great, Connor! Now all you need to do is start hiccuping!" I didn't think much of it at the time, and the conversation moved on. But this evening, while we were waiting for the CT scan results, CheriƩ and I were talking about seizures and she told me that Connor had been hiccuping all day. I remembered what the nurse said, and so I looked it up. Guess what? Hiccups are involuntary contractions of - you guessed it - the diaphragm! Not only that, I also discovered that one of the causes of hiccups is stimulation of the phrenic nerve, which originates at the C3/4/5 level and enervates the diaphragm. I'm liking all this!

I believe the boy's hiccups and coughing are signs that his phrenic nerve is reactivating, and that his diaphragm will begin it's proper job in short order. I also believe that this seizure marks the turning point in this process as his body begins to regain all that's been lost for the last month and a half. We remain confident in God's provision for our son, to His glory.

God is good. All the time.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. TO HIM BE THE POWER FOR EVER AND EVER Amen.

Praise God! What a wonderful update. I was near tears as I read this post. It reminded me of babies. (I have three kids, the youngest of which is 9 months old.) They start hiccuping before they're even born, and it's a sign that their lungs are maturing and preparing to function outside the womb. Then, after they're born - well, my babies, at least - they seem almost plagued by bouts of the hiccups. Amazingly, they don't seem to bother the babies at all. Again, it's supposedly a good sign related to lung function - or so I've been told. Anyway, that is an absolutely wonderful development. Many continued prayers - and praise to God for what He has done and is doing!

Eric - Absolutely fantastic news! Praise God!

I was reading in Jeremiah this morning and came across this verse:

Jer 15:16 Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; for I am called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts. (NKJV)

What's the next memory verse?

Oh Gracious Lord,
We proudly come, kneeling at Your throne.
And thank You for the answered prayers, You've recently made known.
For in Your neat and amazing ways, You've worked out each detail,
And lifted up "the boy" who has been so weak and frail.
We praise You for the big things, and the smaller still,
for now we praise You for the "hiccups" which are now a great and mighty deal.
We praise You that precious Connor is fearfully and wonderfully made,
and every detail in his life is being healed day by day.
We trust You Father, we know Your Sovereign, Your ways are not our own,
We rest and wait on You today, You are Mighty, Powerful, and on Your throne.
Hallelujah to the Prince of Peace, the Maker of all things new,
Our King of kings, and Lord of Lords, we adore You!

We ALL hate the hiccups.....and I do seem to get them daily. Just another way we can be reminded to pray for Connor and your family. So thank you God for these daily reminders!

Hope your Sunday and time as a family was good before having to head to work. Know God is there no matter how far you are from each other.
