Day 16 - July 1 - Is there anyone else up there we could talk to?
Last night's numbers - 85% O2, 98% saturation. I went home and prayed that we would continue to see improvement in Connor's numbers, and I specifically prayed that we would see the numbers go down to 60% O2 while his saturation level stayed stable. I just left Connor's room and the numbers were 60% O2 and 100% saturation! Before I could say anything to the family, two others commented that they had been praying to see 60% today as well. What an answer to prayer - my God is worthy to be praised. The nurses are pleased with Connor's progress, and say that his clinical picture is improving!
Interestingly enough, the day started with a conversation between a neurosurgeon and myself. The gist of the conversation, in an oblique fashion, was that we should prepare ourselves to let Connor die. The doctor told me of the possible infections, the near-certainty that no function will ever be regained, and that we should consider that even if he manages to pull through, the odds were that he would not have a lengthy life. He reminded me that Christopher Reeve had access to every medical technique and assistance money could buy, and he only lived nine years after his accident. He wanted to make sure we used "common sense" as we made decisions about Connor's care.
I tell you these things not to frighten or panic anyone - the possibility has existed all along that God may call Connor home. I also don't tell you these things to extinguish hope - my hope is in the Lord (the maker of heaven and earth), not in a neurosurgeon. I tell you these things because you need to hear how God is moving in and around us. I told the neurosurgeon that I am confident in the provision of my God; and I continue to claim the promise implicit in this verse:
"The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much" - James 5:16.
I'm a man, and I am praying, so the verse looks like this -
"The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much".
I'm not righteous - except in light of my standing before God because of the blood of Christ. Then I am righteous, and that makes it look like this -
"The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much".
If there's anything I am about this, it's fervent -
"The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much".
Now, the "avails much" part is under God's control - I either believe it or not, and I believe it. So now I'm pretty much working on the "effective" part. This is where your support is so critical - I don't think "man" means "male"; I think it means "human". If you're a follower of Christ, you're righteous in God's eyes because of the blood of the Lamb, even if you don't feel like it all the time. You are all fervently lifting Connor and my family to the throne of God. And you are being as effective as you know how. What a promise, that our prayers can actually move the hand of God!
I am endeavoring to give you the most up-to-date information in order to make your prayers more effective. And that's why I tell you about my conversation this morning - so that we can fervently and effectively pray.
So the answer to the question posed in the title of the post is a resounding "Yes"! Praise be to God, who promises that He hears our prayers and answers us!

Eric, I know that God's mighty hand is upon Conner, and upon you and all your family. He loves you and is watching over your son, who is His blessed child.
It is encouraging to hear of every positive report of Conner's breathing better. And we continue to hold Conner, and all the family up in prayer each day, each hour.
Doctors feel required to give the "worst case" evaluation, but I can't help but believe that the doctors are seeing God's work too, and they will be in awe!
Stay strong and be at peace. God is with you.

I respect medical science and those who devote their lives to it. BUT, I respect God MORE! And I believe in HIM to do miracles beyond what modern medicine says is possible or probable. Our LORD has answered so many specific prayer requests over the past 2+ weeks. Some of them immediately, some of them we've had to wait days for the answer. But He's answered...in mighty and amazing ways!
And he's made foolish the wise.

[Pray for] a completely clean and positive result on the tests today, both with his arteries and his lungs

From June 25 - Results Are In blog entry
The same doctor (that told CheriƩ how bad the possibilities of the tests were) just came out and told us that everything was just great! Praise the Lord! When we thanked the doctor for the news, he said "it wasn't me". He was right - it wasn't him!

That is just a sample of how God has been answering our prayers all along. In the next couple days, check on the Prayer Requests and Answered Prayers page of ConnorWatch. You will see just how many prayers God has answered.
I'm praying specifically. (Thanks for your very specific updates!) And I believe God will continue to answer His people because HE is in control...not the doctors.
Praying...believing...

Perhaps it is the doctor who is lacking faith in God? Maybe what he said, all the negativity is from the enemy, placing doubt in the heart of the surgeon and passing that doubt onto you. Stay strong in the Lord. He's in charge.
We will continue our fervent prayer for Connor and for you all.
Lord, I pray that the neurosurgeon will be astounded both by Your power to heal and to mend, and by Your people, who know that our "quality of life" is in our relationship with the living God, not in our physical capabilities and hardships.
I continue to pray "That all will see how great is our God."
I am lifting each of you up very specifically in prayer and I thank our Father God for the privilege to be on your prayer team.

Blessings Eric and family, I know Connor has a very good doctor from a human stand point,my daughter Debbie was in intensive care for
31/2 months and had the best neuro surgeon so we were told but when it came down to it he told me to start making funeral plans. Because we wern't born again back then that's what we started thinking about until a cousin came in and prayed over her and the Lord heard the prayers and Debbie recovered so I know first hand about the limitations of the doctors and about the power of prayer and that God is in control. You are a blessing and an encouragement to me and all others I send Connor updates out to thank you for your faithfulness and remember we will continue praying to our Lord without ceasing, to God be the glory, amen!
Psalm 20:1-5
In times of trouble, may the Lord respond to your cry. may the God of Israel keep you safe from all harm. May He send you help from His sanctuary and strengthen you from Jerusalem. May He remember all your gifts and look favorably on your burnt offerings. may He grant your hearts desire and fulfill all your plans. May we shout for joy when we hear of your victory. Flying banners to honor our God. May the Lord answer all your prayers, In Jesus Name, Amen!
Love you guys, Please give DJ and Sherri a big hug from us.
God Bless, Linda, Bob and Debbie
Eric - amen, and amen! Keep in the Word, brother - it will guard your heart and mind, reveal the character of God to you, feed your soul, and provide strength when the Holy Spirit brings verses to your mind when you wake up at 2am.
Standing with you,
Lee
Our earthly sight is limited,
The future we can't see;
Let come what may,
one thing we know
Our God will faithful be.

After reading this post (specifically about the neurosurgeon), I feel compelled to pass along a bit of information. My dad was in a skiing accident in 1999 that resulted in a C5 spinal cord injury. He was transferred on day 3 to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, which at the time was one of the best spinal cord rehab centers in the state, and completed the remainder of his hospital stay there. If I remember correctly, Santa Clara is much closer to home for you, and may be a good option once Connor is ready for rehab. At any rate, you may want to look into this facility if you haven't yet -- the staff was extremely positive and optimistic, and made my dad's time fun. They even had a great staff of recreational therapists that took the patients on outings around the town and surrounding areas -- they even brought my dad to my college graduation an hour away. Of course doctors are going to be conservative in their predictions, but there is still room for optimism and hope, and I certainly felt that the medical community surrounding my dad had great attitudes.
It is an ongoing process, but I continue to learn that God is bigger than any of our expectations, and that His timing is always best and often different than my own. My dad has far surpassed the expectations of his injury level in terms of recovery -- he started with head, neck, shoulder and bicep control, was expected to gain back forearms and maybe triceps, and has actually continued on to gain stomach, chest and back muscles, as well, and with the help of a recent surgery, even some use of his hand muscles. We don't feel that he is finished yet, and he in fact continues to improve. We also know that any day could be the day that God grants him the big miracle of walking again.
Every story is different -- we are praying that the Lord allows Connor to heal quickly and completely, knowing that He is absolutely able.
If you need more information, I would be happy to get it from my dad. I live at Hume, and am actually the wife of one of the EMTs on scene with Connor -- Joel -- he came down to visit during the first week. You can reach me through the Hume office: 559-335-2000. Again, we are praying for Connor and your family, knowing from a different perspective the journey that you are on. Praise God that in the midst of tremendous heartache, you are able on a broad forum (worldwide!) to give glory to Him and demonstrate His amazing work in your hearts and lives!
In Christ,
Jen Schuler
